Thika Dam which is popularly known as Ndakaini Dam, nestled in the lush landscape of Murang’a County, stands as one of the most crucial water reservoirs serving Nairobi and its neighboring areas. With a capacity of 70 million cubic meters, it plays a fundamental role in ensuring water security for millions of residents.
EBE students gained invaluable insight into water resource engineering and environmental stewardship. The dam receives its water from rainfall collected within the Aberdare Ranges, a critical water tower in Kenya. This water is then channeled through two main rivers River Githika and River Thika (also known locally as Kiama and another tributary) which stream towards the Ngethu Water Treatment Plant.
The excursion emphasized watershed conservation, sediment management, and the balance between infrastructural development and ecological preservation. Students were able to relate theoretical hydrological models to practical applications in catchment hydrodynamics.
