The Ngethu Water Treatment Plant transforms raw water from Ndakaini Dam into safe drinking water through a rigorous purification process. It is one of Nairobi’s key treatment facilities.
Students toured the entire flow path, starting with raw water intake, then into the rapid mixing units, sedimentation tanks, filtration systems, and eventually the chlorination chamber. They learned about water quality parameters, chemical dosing calculations, and redundancy planning in utility operations.
The integration of environmental engineering with public health stood out during this visit. Real-world discussions on minimizing water loss, maintenance of pipelines, and managing fluctuations in water demand added practical depth to their academic understanding.
