Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute (KIRDI) is a government institute under Ministry of Trade, Investments and Industry. KIRDI core mandate is to undertake research, development and innovation in industrial and allied technologies and disseminate research findings to support industrial development. Biosystems Engineering visited KIRDI with an aim to learn engineering design process of any given project. The engineering design process emphasizes open-ended problem solving and encourages students to learn from failure. This process nurtures students’ abilities to create innovative solutions to challenges in any subject!
The main area of our visit was engineering department. Our goal was equipment designs Reverse engineering, Design for manufacture (CAD/CAM technology) Subtractive manufacturing, material selection, machining, fabrication and maintenance activities.
At the institute, students were able to see some of the completed and undergoing projects in different departments. The following are some of the departments they visited Civil engineering, Mechanical engineering, Electrical engineering, Chemical engineering, Textile technology, Industrial chemistry, Food technology, Natural products technology, Leather technology, Emerging technologies and Building materials technology.
