The Numerical Machining Complex (NMC), based in Nairobi’s industrial zone, is a state-owned facility dedicated to precision engineering, manufacturing, and technological innovation. It supports local industries by producing machinery components and prototypes tailored to Kenya’s development needs.
Students explored cutting-edge machining technologies such as CNC milling and turning, metal casting, and welding procedures. A highlight of the visit was the Computer-Aided Design (CAD) lab, where they observed how digital blueprints are developed and simulated before being fabricated on physical machines. CAD software forms the backbone of modern design and allowed students to bridge the gap between conceptual modeling and manufacturing.
The experience showcased how mechanical ingenuity complements environmental infrastructure whether in designing efficient irrigation equipment or constructing sustainable sanitation systems. It inspired the students to think critically about locally-driven engineering solutions for environmental challenges.
